Random micro

Visiting Gower for a long weekend, but I didn't bring my moth books with me. I spotted this micro on the coast path in Overton; can anyone tell me what it is?

(Other moths seen, again randomly, Early Grey and Esperia sulphurella).

Parc Slip

Last night was the only chance I have this week to set the trap unfortunately but it wasn't a bad haul - 75 moths of 19 species with the highlights being Parc Slip's 5th yellow-barred brindle and 7th streamer - both very fresh. Also the first nut-tree tussock of the year. Non-moth interest was provided by a single Nicrophorus humator.

Stigmella aurella query

GMS box on Friday night produced 53 moths of 13 species. Most were the usual suspects, but this little beastie (approx 3mm) appeared on the window - I think it could be Stigmella aurella which would be a new moth for me.
A nightmare to photograph as light was reflecting all over the place.

Llandaff - Garden - 13th April

A chilly night produced low numbers again for GMS.

Best being the Satellite, others being Early Grey, Brindled Beauty, Small Quaker, Common Quaker and Hebrew Character.

Lletty Brongu, Maesteg 12/04/18

Photographed this longhorn moth on Wood Anemone today doesn't seem to be one of the "Adela" but more like Cauchas rufimitrella, which would be quite an early date considering the winter we've just had up here, they are usually out in May. Thoughts? - no other photo angles before it flew off.

Parc tir iarll, Llangynwyd, 7/4/18

                               Oak nycteoline

                              Shoulder stripe.
92 moths of 13 species inc Early tooth striped 3, Twin
spotted quaker 4, Small quaker 15 and top dog was
                              34 Common quaker.

Creigiau - last night

Temperature of 10C so put the box out for a few hours lat night (21:00-00:30). Felt a lot colder when the wind picked up but 8 species paid a visit, mostly the 'regulars' but an Early Thorn was a first for the year, and the star of the show was my first ever Acleris cristana (at least that is what I'm hoping it is).

Sunday 8 April 2018

Llandaff - Garden - 6th April

It's been very slow here in the garden. A total catch of 11 moths of 8 species, the biggest of the year so far.

Common Quaker, Early Grey, Hebrew Character, Early Thorn, Double-striped Pug, Emmelina monodactyla, Scoparia ambigualis and Agonopterix heracliana/ciliella.

Forecast looks favourable for this evening in Llandaff.

Saturday 7 April 2018

Creigiau - 06 April

A really good box last night for GMS with the best haul of the year so far - 66 moths of 15 species. Expected numbers of Quakers but Early Grey topped the list with 16.

Highlights were 2 Mompha divisella on the garage window and the first 2018 visits by Brindled Pug (I hope) and Oak Nycteoline.

Wednesday 4 April 2018

Parc Slip

Finally a decent haul at Parc Slip last night - 94 moths of 15 species (plus a noctuid that escaped). Highlights were the first engrailed, brindled pug and yellow horned of 2018 along with only the 3rd and 4th ever mottled greys.
Top scorers were predictably clouded drab (21), hebrew character (17) and common quaker (15). A couple of smart oak beauties and, one of my favourite early species, a shoulder stripe were other highlights.

Acleris literana

A very pleasing addition to the Llandaff North garden list last night.

The 8 Hebrew Characters in the trap was a record total for my garden, where the Orthosia species usually only turn up in small numbers.
