I was planning to trap at Merthyr Mawr NNR last night, but it was a bit too windy for coastal trapping so I opted for Lanlay Meadows (Peterston-super-Ely) instead. I trapped at this site several times in 2014 but failed to do so during June and July, so it seemed worth a visit at this time of year.
Conditions were reasonable if not especially promising, with a dusk temperature of 14.5C which barely dropped in the 3 hours I was there. I found a sheltered spot behind a thick hedge and so the wind wasn't an issue. The resulting catch was around 72 species. There was nothing outstanding among these, the best being 2 Small Seraphim (also trapped here in May 2014 - a species which reaches its eastern limit in the county in this area). Others included Lobster, Elephant Hawk (8), Double Line (4), Gold Spot, Rivulet, Sandy Carpet,
Evergestis pallidata and
Nematopogon metaxella.
