Gorseinon

A good night last night with five new species for the garden, four of which were macros: Cypress Carpet, Leopard Moth, Brown-tail, Four-dotted Footman 2 (I'm sure I've seen this in the garden before, but I must have forgotten to write it down), along with Donacaula forficella. Pics and summary of catch later...
... The totals for last night’s trap were 315 individuals of 89 species, additional species of interest including Phtheochroa inopiana 1 (24th garden record), Lozotaenia forsterana 1 (30th g.r.), Pammene regiana 2 (20th g.r.), Pammene fasciana 2 (7th g.r.), Lesser Wax Moth 1 (4th g.r.), Dioryctria abietella 1 (2nd g.r.), Sloe Pug 1 (8th g.r.), Bordered White 10 (10th g.r., all previous records singletons), Eyed Hawk-moth 5 (70th g.r., highest count), Elephant Hawk-moth 23 (274th g.r., second highest count) & Scarce Silver Lines (11th g.r.). There were also 8 species of hemiptera including Deraeocoris flavilinea 8 (listed as Vagrant/Accidental, though I suspect now an established colonist) & Juniper Shieldbug 1. Three soldier-flies were noted including Nemotelus notatus 1 (5th g.r.) and finally there were 3 Harlequin Ladybirds (only 5th g.r., though I’ve seen vast quantities in Swansea). Yesterday I saw our first ever garden Marbled White, so things are certainly moving around.

  1. Well done Barry. I was seriously thinking of trapping but the forecast was so `gloom and doom` (`torrential rain/strong winds` etc) that I did n`t. I know next time to rely on my `feel` for the weather. I`ve never seen leopard, brown tail nor cypress carpet!
I`ll try tonight, but the weather is less favourable.

  2. It's amazing you're still getting that many new species in one night after all the years you've been trapping there, and with your list being so long already. I had 3 new species last night, all micros - will blog later.
