Creigiau - 27 & 29 July

Two more moderate trapping sessions but the variety continues to be good. Four new moths for the year on Wednesday night, including a very nice Yellow-tail. This insisted on 'sleeping' on its side, but persistence paid off in the end and I managed to get a photo.

On Friday, the temperature was a little warmer and I had 40 species of which 12 were new for the year, including Black Arches (x3), Canary-shouldered Thorn and Marbled Beauty. Small China-mark made a first ever appearance in the garden and 5 others were completely new ... assuming my IDs are correct!

Aspilapteryx tringipennella query
Carcina quercana
Could these be Gypsonoma oppressana and Smoky Wainscot

and I think this is a Tineidae sp.

  1. Yes to tringipennella and oppressana, nice record.

Probably Smoky Wainscot but I find these tricky from photos.

Tineid could be Monopis imella but I don't think there are any VC41 records. Do you still have it?

  2. Thanks George.

The Tineid is long gone. I don't tend to keep the moths for long once I've taken some pics - especially if they look quite distinctive like this red-headed little beastie.
