Parc Slip yesterday

There was nothing flying at a cool and cloudy at Parc Slip yesterday - so instead I looked for Coleophora cases and was pleased, after quite a lot of searching, to find a single case of C. paripennella on knapweed. Only the 7th county record I think.

More dramatic was this female Emperor, found at rest on the ground by the visitor centre.

Merthyr mawr yesterday.

                       Aethes tesserana

I found several mines on Birch and would like confirmation on these please.
                      Eriocrania salopiella?

Eriocrania cicatricella? Two larva can be seen.

                      Eriocrania semipurpurella?

No idea on this, no larvae visible in this one.
                       Thanks in advance.

Creigiau - 16 April

The only opportunity to put the box out for GMS was Sunday night. Turned out rather well with a min temperature of 8.5C resulting in 38 moths of 13 species, although 17 of these were Brindled Beauty!
Four species were new for the year - a fine looking Brimstone Moth, Brown Silver-line, Lunar Marbled Brown and my first ever Pale Prominent.

Creigiau - last night

Mid-week box last night. Temperature was reasonable (min 7.5C) but the wind was more than a little chilly. Well worth the effort though - 18 moths of 9 species with Angle Shades making a first appearance of the year and my first ever Mullein .... if my ID is correct.

Parc slip.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I think this is an early Phyllonorycter
viminiella. Netted along the canal path this morning.

Llandaff - 7th April

First Butterflies of the year  - 2 x Holly Blues feeding on Laurel Blossom.

Trapping in the evening was very cold down to 6.9C. A small catch, but I think the Waved Umber is new to the garden. The rest being V- Pug, Hebrew Character, Brindled Beauty, Common Quaker and Brown House Moth.

Started the mid-week boxes again. 43 moths of 13 species last night, including 13 Brindled Beauty. First visits of the year from Nut-tree Tussock, Streamer and Purple Thorn.

Nantyffyllon today.

Several Adela cuprella in the sallow tops.

Creigiau - 30 March (again)

Can't think how I forgot to add that I also saw  my second ever Pine Beauty.

Llandaff - 31st March

A warm evening with slight drizzle around 10.5C for a change. Low numbers and a bit more varied.

Twenty-plume moth (in house), Double Striped Pug, Brindled Beauty, Early Grey, Common Quaker, Small Quaker, Hebrew Character and a Clouded Drab.

I've signed up for the GMS this year, so hoping to contribute some records too.

Sadly, since having the lanes gated in the Avenue, a few neighbours have decided to chop down the trees and shrubs in their gardens, to make way for their cars. Good job I planted six more native trees last year.

Creigiau - 30 March

An early GMS box produced 49 moths of 19 species - not in Vaughn's league but I was still pleased.

Undoubted highlight was this stunning little Twenty-plume Moth, together with a first 2017 visit by Water Carpet and V-Pug. The latter is at least a month earlier than any previous year.

Llandaff North - Friday night

I'm now into my 11th year of trapping in my Llandaff North garden, so I don't get too many new species - and most of those I do get are in the summer. So it was nice to finally add Pale Pinion to the garden list last night.

I also had my second garden record of Pine Beauty, among the usual seasonal fare.
