You may or may not be aware that there is a new checklist for British Lepidoptera being published in the next few weeks.
Rather remarkably there are only 400 copies being printed, so if you want to ensure that you get a copy then it is suggested that you email the publishers (publications@field-studies-council.org) to reserve a copy. The cover prices is £25, plus £3 p&p if you get it from the field studies council.
Dave do you know if it's still in B&F order or the new European numbering system? And 400 does seem a lowly amount for a hobby that runs into thousands of observers!
ReplyDeleteTotally new numbering system, taxonomic order and names!
ReplyDeleteI think I'll take up stamp collecting instead. At least no one messes around with the names!
ReplyDeleteIs MapMate planning to follow this new system?
ReplyDeleteMapMate will move over to the new nomenclature and taxonomic ordering when Mark gets time to update it. He is intending to keep B&F numbers in the system somewhere to help with the transition.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair to the the authors of this new checklist the only reason that is is going to be so traumatic this time is because us Brits have been ignoring what has been done on the continent for the past 30 years. If we'd kept up we'd be used to it all by now!
£25 for a checklist! And i have 2300 photos labelled with the "old" numbers, i think i'll pass...
ReplyDeleteIs there likely to be an electronic version released? A spreadsheet with all the data would be very handy.
ReplyDeleteI am told that the authors have no intention of releasing the list electronically. That said, it will I'm sure only be a matter of time before someone creates a spreadsheet version (possibly from MapMate!).
ReplyDeleteI have been told that an electronic list will be made available, but not an electronic version of the full checklist (with the synonyms etc).
ReplyDeleteI've ordered the beast and await its eventual arrival with some trepidation. While in Norfolk recently, I got the chance to thumb through a copy of Clancy et al, and found the reordering of everything completely confusing. I assume the new system will be along similar lines, so will take quite a bit of getting used to. It will certainly make collating my records before entering onto MapMate a much slower process, I suspect... ah well!
