I found an Elephant Hawk-moth pupae today, and will take it in to my son's school to let it hatch out so the kids can see it. What is the best way of going about it? I was thinking of putting it in a large jam jar with some damp moss or sand and a few twigs, and telling them to keep it warm but not hot and out of the sun. Would that work OK?
Hi, a friend of mine, Jim O'Neill, has reared ellie hawks and says what you're planning to do is fine. It just needs a large container and something for it to climb onto to dry its wings.

Thank you Samuel - much appreciated. I'll give it a go!
ReplyDeleteAdam it may be worth putting some moss in there to help maintain a little humidity and to give the emerging moth some purchase.
ReplyDeleteThanks Barry - I've added plenty of moss now. Knowing my luck I'll get parasitic wasps emerging that terrorise the kiddies!
