Small Waved Umber

I was both surprised and delighted to see this Small Waved Umber on a car showroom window in Llandaff North this morning. I think this is only the third Cardiff record, though there is some Wild Clematis (the foodplant) along the River Taff corridor.

  1. I'd have been delighted too. George. I've only had this species once and rather strangely, it was in top of the hill between Abernant and Heolgerrig, almost alongside the raven roost and miles away from the nearest wild Clematis, so perhaps it also uses some garden cultivars too.

  2. This is one of the few species that seems to have had a good 2013 in Rhoose. I've seen quite a few including one trapping session when there were 5 or so flitting about!
