Tachystola acroxantha

Trapped this extremely grotty specimen of this Australian species in my garden last night. It took me a while to work out what it was, as it's almost entirely missing the bright orange cilia.

It's surprising it has taken so long to turn up, as Dave has been catching them regularly in Llanishen for a few years. Elsewhere in Glamorgan it has been recorded in Porthcawl and Swansea.

  1. What does it feed on? Is this the one you get on Eucalyptus?....always handy to learn what species feeds on what, or tips re which plants to search for particular species.
    Thanks.

  2. They feed on dead/decaying leaves, perhaps including Eucalyptus. Apparently they can be found in the upper layers of compost heaps.
